a quick status report: i have been hit by mastitis and it is not pleasant. as if the painful boob wasn’t enough, i have copped all the flu-like symptoms. so i’m achey and have a fever and the chills. i tried to get a doctor appointment yesterday but late this morning was the earliest available. at the time i didn’t know if i could survive until 11.30am the next day and i knew i was pretty sick. so i called the maternal health line and after waiting on hold for a long time i got to speak to a lovely nurse who was really really nice to me. she was very patient and sympathetic and gently talked me through all the things i need to do to help resolve the mastitis. then she offered to ring my doctor and get me an earlier appointment because she was so worried about me. 15 minutes later my doctor rang to say she had written me prescription for antibiotics which i could pick up. so i started on the drugs and i feel a bit better this morning, after a horrible feverish night, and i’ll still see the doctor today.
it was quite scary realising that i was sick because i felt too sick to care for the twinkle properly. luckily special k was here and was wonderful – she took over the baby care for the day. but it really made me appreciate having a great partner, and also made me think about carers leave.

mastitis is horrible. I had it with Finn and just remember the misery of it. I hope you get rid of it quickly.

I hope the antibiotics help!

I’ve had two bouts of mastitis and they were both awful. The only ‘good’ thing about mastitis is that once the antibiotics kick in, you feel a lot better very quickly.

Hope it’s starting to clear up by now. It’s such an awful feeling and I know what you mean about feeling unable to look after bubs. Thankfully whe i had it mum was able to come and stay. That was great that the nurse was able to get on to your doc and the get the script.
