the twinkle in my eye

Filed under: keeping mum, love and life

yesterday i kept noticing all the things you get used to as a parent.

firstly, in the morning i bumped into some colleagues in a cafe. one is a mum of young adults, another has a daughter the same age as the twinkle, and the third doesn’t have kids. the second one was talking about how well her breast pumping is going and that she has enough stored to be able to go out to dinner. the first woman was impressed and i took a moment to boast about my pumping prowess back in the day. we looked over at the third woman and she had stopped sipping her latte and pushed it away. apparently we’d put her off all dairy products for the day. you get so used talking about milking yourself like a cow that you don’t realise it’s not talked about in polite company.

later in the day back at the office i went to the toilet and i actually almost forgot to shut the cubicle door before sitting down. i’m so used to leaving the door open so that the twinkle knows where i am and i know where she is.

near the end of the day i dropped in to a work function with the twinkle who i had to pick up early from the baby factory due to runny poo (the usual story). as i politely socialised, the twinkle kept sticking her hand into my glass trying to fish out the ice, leaving behind tiny bits of cheese and cracker crumbs and strawberry pulp. a horrified woman offered to get me a fresh drink that didn’t have crumbs in it. i hadn’t even registered that my drink was being contaminated. i was just glad she was staying in my lap and being quiet!

i wonder what else we get used to and don’t even notice.

happy birthday to special k. oh boy is she special to me.

Happy birthday Special K.

I would have thought the idea of cows being pumped would put someone that delicate off milk for good :) although i have noticed most people do forget that bit.

So don’t you get fresh with me (sorry you got that song in my head with your title)

Happy birthday K! I like the retro photo for her birthday.

What I’ve noticed is how comfortable I am with talking about the unique things to lesbians conceiving, and how it’s not such widespread information. I was aware of that a few weeks ago when I was at a party for Maria’s co-worker’s kid. There were a lot of straight people there who, it was clear, didn’t associate with lesbians much. I was talking to Maria’s co-worker’s wife about ttc and she was giving me all sorts of weird looks. I was just being all matter-of-fact about it. It’s just so normal to me. Oh well. She got an education at least. :)

Happy Birthday Special K!

I love that cartoon so much I inhaled Sultana Bran.

I’ve done the toilet thing, too. And our loos face out into the changing room.

Stuff I ignore:
Tiny bits of food left all over the floor/your clothes/the car/work documents/ your bed/ any available surface… that occasionally get eaten (and not just by the cat anymore). Crusty snot. Talking about someone else’s poo (although that happens in ICU too). Singing along in the car to Old MacDonald’s Farm. At the top of your lungs. Saying “ta” to complete strangers.
